At last year's DICE Conference & Festival, Dr. Emilia Roig gave a talk about the politicization of identity politics. She critically interrogated, challenged, and engaged with some of the following questions: Should we get rid of identity politics and move beyond the very categories that are the basis for social hierarchies and inequalities? Or shall we continue to think, talk and frame oppression, inequality, (in)visiblity and domination along these lines? Can we move on and see them as a remnants from the past, or do we still need them to achieve our political goals?
CIJ is happy to continue our partnership with DICE as we anticipate another talk given by Dr. Emilia Roig. This year, she addresses how oppressive patterns permeate all areas of life, including left wing movements and politics. Toxicity and domination can be overcome. If we shift our resources and power to another direction, from reacting to dismantling and creating we can escape reproducing the patterns inherited from oppressors. It's easier said than done, but therein lies the power of liberation.
DICE Conference + Festival is an annual three-day event including live performances, workshops, panels, and lectures aiming to elevate vital and innovative voices and create an alternative model for music spaces. The three-day programme showcases interdisciplinary artists who expand the boundaries of artistic practice and stimulate critical dialogue in the broader community.
